Cherry-Picking

Cherry-Picking真正的意思是to choose or select what’s to one’s advantage (專挑或選擇對自己有利的)。 The defendant aided by his lawyer, cherry-picks evidence in his favor.( 被告在律師幫助下,專挑對自己有利的證據)。

本欄1016期談到世界銀行總裁伍夫維茲 (Paul D.Wolfowitz) 目前正陷於苦戰,常被指責cherry-picked intelligence to sell President Bush and the American people a war with Iraq (挑了一些情報讓布希總統和美國人民支持對伊拉克的戰爭)。

Cheery-picking history so that Chiang Kai-shek and his cronies can remain exalted is altogether indecent.

Political persuasion determines how his legacy translates; Either you see him as a brutal dictator who held the island hostage under martial law, or as the man who valiantly defended Taiwan against Chinese Communist invasion. Because supporters of the first view are calling the shots these days, the shots these days, the dictator, who died in 1975, is taking a beating.

以上引文值得學習的字和片語如下:a polarizing figure (兩極化的人物);political persuasion (政治信念);legacy(歷史地位);a brutal dictator(殘暴的獨裁者);held the island hostage(使臺灣形同人質);martial law (戒嚴或軍法);calling the shots (發號施令或主宰);take a beating (受到鞭笞)。注意:如果是take some or a lot of beating, 意思就變為hard to surpass (不易超越)了,例如:She’ll take some beating.(超越她很難);His record will take a lot of beating.

上一期(1017期)本欄提到life is no bed of roses. Life is just a bowl of cherries.(人生有如一盤櫻桃,即甜蜜寫意)。
